How to autotune a vocal
- Upload your vocal. An a cappella or a vocal stem works best. Starting from a finished song? Run Stem Splitter first and use the vocals track.

- Pick a style. Natural, Tight, or Hard.

Natural, Tight, Hard
The style is the whole decision, and the three are genuinely different effects rather than degrees of one.
Natural corrects quietly. Flat and sharp notes get nudged onto pitch, the slides between them stay smooth, and the result sounds like a better take rather than a processed one. This is what most records use and nobody notices.
Tight corrects faster and further. You can hear it working on the quick passages — that slight glassiness at the front of each note that modern pop vocals have.
Hard snaps every note instantly, with no glide between them. This is the T-Pain sound: pitch moves in steps and the voice becomes an instrument. Use it as an effect, not as a fix.
Let it find the key
Pitch correction has to know what counts as correct. Most tools ask you for the key and leave you guessing — and guessing wrong is why tuned vocals sometimes come back sounding worse than they went in.
Here you can hand it the instrumental under “Key from” and it works the key out from the backing track. Prefer to set it yourself? Key and scale are both in the additional settings. Give it neither and it corrects to the nearest chromatic note, which is less dramatic but never fights the song.
Tips
- Vocals only. Run it on a full mix and it will chase whatever instrument is loudest.
- Dry in, effects after. Tune first, then add reverb and compression.
- Hard needs commitment. The robotic effect only reads as deliberate when it runs across the whole part.
- Watch the worst line. A note more than a semitone off can get pulled onto the wrong neighbour — retake that line rather than tuning it.
FAQ
What is autotune? Pitch correction software. It detects the pitch of each note in a vocal and moves it onto the nearest correct note. It was built to fix small tuning errors, and it became a deliberate effect once producers turned the correction speed all the way up.
What is autotune in music? Two different things, depending on who is talking. Most of the time it is invisible studio housekeeping — nearly every commercial vocal is tuned a little. The rest of the time it is the audible robotic effect, a stylistic choice in pop, hip-hop and R&B since the late 1990s.
When was autotune invented? Antares released the first Auto-Tune plugin in 1997. It was built by Andy Hildebrand, an engineer who had been using the same correlation maths to read seismic data for oil prospecting. Cher’s “Believe” in 1998 was the first hit to use the hard setting as an audible effect.
Is this the same as Antares Auto-Tune? No. Auto-Tune is Antares’ desktop plugin for a DAW. This is a browser tool doing the same job — pitch detection and correction against a key — with nothing to install.
Does it work on rap? Yes, and it is the usual home of the Hard setting. Melodic rap tunes exactly the way sung vocals do.
Can I run it on a whole song? You can, but it will track the loudest pitched thing it hears, which on a full mix is rarely the voice. Split the vocal out first.
What if I don’t know the key? Upload the instrumental under “Key from” and it detects it. Otherwise leave it empty and it corrects chromatically.
